What Powers Your Watch: A Look Inside the NH35 Movement

When you invest in a watch, you’re not just buying a beautiful case or a stylish strap — you’re buying the beating heart inside it. At ATOMISHINE, we believe in being transparent about what powers our timepieces. That’s why today, we’re taking you inside the NH35 movement — the reliable mechanical engine driving many of our watches.

What is the NH35 Movement?

The NH35, also known as NH35A, is a Japanese automatic movement produced by Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII). It's part of Seiko’s widely respected “NH” series — a family of robust mechanical movements often favored by microbrands and even larger watchmakers looking for reliability at a fair cost.

It’s the same movement you’ll find in watches that cost far more, and for good reason.

Why We Chose the NH35

We chose the NH35 because it offers an exceptional balance between durability, performance, and serviceability. Whether you're a first-time mechanical watch buyer or a seasoned collector, the NH35 delivers on the fundamentals:

  • Automatic and hand-winding: It winds as you wear it, but can also be wound manually — ideal for those who like to keep their watches off the wrist now and then.
  • Hacking seconds: When you pull out the crown to set the time, the seconds hand stops — a feature often found in higher-end movements that allows precise time setting.
  • 24 jewels: These synthetic rubies reduce friction at key points, contributing to smoother operation and longer movement life.
  • Power reserve: Up to 41 hours, so you can take it off for a day and still keep ticking when you pick it back up.
  • Accuracy: Factory spec ranges from -20 to +40 seconds per day, though many NH35s perform more precisely once properly regulated.

A Movement You Can Trust

The NH35 has earned a reputation over the years as a workhorse movement. It’s not flashy. It’s not hyped. But it works — consistently, reliably, and for many years without issue.

We’ve field-tested our watches under daily wear, travel, and tough outdoor use — and the NH35 keeps going. It's an honest engine, built for the long haul.

See It for Yourself

Many of our models feature an exhibition caseback, allowing you to see the NH35 in motion. The rotor — often engraved with our brand logo — spins gently as you move, silently winding the mainspring that keeps time ticking.

There’s something deeply satisfying about watching a mechanical movement at work. No battery. No charging. Just gears, springs, and balance wheels doing what they’ve been engineered to do.

Final Thoughts

In a world of disposable electronics and short-lived trends, we believe in building things that last. That’s why we stand behind the NH35 — not just as a technical choice, but as a statement of values: reliability, transparency, and timeless mechanics.

Next time you glance down at your wrist, know there’s more than design behind your watch — there’s a legacy of mechanical engineering that’s stood the test of time.
